Best Interest Panel

Local Authority Panel which considers whether adoption is in principle in a child's best interest. Once an adoption plan has panel approval, the Local Authority will apply for a placement order to move the child into an adoptive placement.

Birth Family

Birth family is the term used to describe a child's natural parents when a child has been adopted.

Boundaries

Term often used by social workers to mean ‘ground rules' for children.

Brussels II

An EU Regulation which came into force from 1 March 2001 which harmonized divorce jurisdictions across Europe.  It introduced across Europe the rule that the first spouse to issue a divorce petition in a country has jurisdiction (the country where the proceedings will be processed).  This can have a great disadvantage to the other party.  Couples where there is a connection with two European countries should seek quick legal advice.
