Refuge

Emergency residential establishment often for victims of domestic violence that offer protection. 

Rehab

A term short for rehabilitation. Rehab refers to a therapeutic residential or non residential program designed to help a person with drug or alcohol dependency to address and then kick their habit.

Recorder

Recorders are part-time Judges who sit in the crown and civil (county) courts and have a similar jurisdiction to that of a circuit judge although they hear less complex cases.

Regulation 38 Assessments

Under the Fostering Regulations 2002, where someone such as a family member or friend offers to be a carer for the child, the local authority has to carry out a regulation 38 assessment to consider the persons suitability.  A child can be placed with the family member or friend for up to 6 weeks while the assessment is carried out.   Parents will be asked to provide the local authority with the details of anyone who may wish to be assessed to care for the child in the event that the child cannot go home once proceedings have commenced.

Relevant Child

A child of the family under 16 years of age at the date of the decree nisi or between 16 and 18 who is receiving instruction at an educational establishment or undergoing training for a trade, profession or vocation or up to any age if the child disabled or dependent.

Remedies

The power of the court to enforce a right or correct a wrong or prevent a wrong.

Remove from Jurisdiction

If a child is taken out of the country that child is removed from the jurisdiction of the English courts. This may happen illegally in the case of a child being abducted (see http://www.reunite.org/) or because a parent wishes to leave the country with leave of the court (see http://www.familylawweek.co.uk/library.asp?i=3034).

Reserved Costs

The decision on costs is deferred to a later date which is often to the final hearing.

Residence Order

An order under s 8 of the Children Act 1989 which states with whom a child is to live.

Residential Assessment

An assessment of a child and a parent within a residential as opposed to a community setting, conducted with a view to ascertaining the parenting abilities of the parent being assessed.

Respondent

The defending party, or party who is  responding to an application to the court.

Robed

When a lawyer or judge is wearing traditional court wear of a wig and gown.

Robing Room

A room in court reserved for advocates and solicitors. The room is set aside to allow barristers to put on their court robes.
